I’ve always looked at still images as a gateway to an emotion; a single frame that can capture any feeling. I spend hours looking at pictures; and have always admired the individuals that have the creative eye to make such a statement.
From the moment I made my oatmeal box camera in my freshman high school photography class- I have enjoyed taking pictures. However, outside of this simple class I have only spent time admiring the art form- never partaking in learning or expanding my personal skill set.
While at supper with friends a few weeks ago- my friend made a very simple, but impactful statement in regards to employment- do what makes you happy. I responded- ‘oh, just like that- boom, like magic’. After reflecting on this statement- I spent some time at home talking with my husband about this and I got to thinking…
Night after night, I watch him create computer programs- simple things from helping us perform daily tasking more efficiently, to taking a childhood memory and making it into a game. An art form that he has come to know, love and take pride in. Every night he is simply doing what makes him happy- programming. Simple as that right? Do what makes you happy. So- after a little bit of encouragement, I too decided to keep it simple- continue to create memories- and attempt to capture emotion.
So today- I did a bit of reading- and took a deep look into my camera- and figured out that this silly ‘f’ on my camera is in regards to aperture settings; rather than a way to curse me while attempting to use the manual settings. I am in no way a professional- nor am I convinced that someday this form of art will pay my bills- I did however, enjoy the few hours I spent reading, and taking a few images around the house. And simply enough- that makes me happy.
So- cheers to you- do what makes you happy.
